Is speeding a serious crime?

In the state of New Jersey, speeding is illegal. In most cases, it is categorized as a misdemeanor rather than a felony. This may make some people falsely believe that speeding isn't a serious crime, but the consequences for a speeding ticket can actually be severe.

The Department of Motorized Vehicles (DMV) shows that New Jersey runs on a points system in regard to traffic violations. This means that every traffic violation you're convicted of will result in points being added to your license. This applies regardless of whether the violation is a major or minor one, so any speeding infraction will count.

So what does having points on your license mean, exactly? After reaching a certain number of points, you may face additional penalties like fines or even the suspension of your license. For example, accumulating 12 or more points will likely result in a license suspension. Receiving 6 points within a 3 year period will result in a surcharge. This surcharge must be paid annually over a period of 3 years.

The surcharge also exists in addition to any previous fines or fees doled out by the court, as well as the cost of the speeding ticket itself. Regardless of the level of infraction you have committed, a speeding ticket will almost always accompany the penalties.

If you have been charged with speeding, you may want to contact an attorney. If you allow too many points to accumulate on your license, you could find yourself facing much more than a simple ticket and the inconvenience that comes with having to pay it off.
