Points and license suspension in New Jersey

Whether you have been a licensed driver in New Jersey for a long time or are newly licensed here, you will likely know that the state can and does track any type of traffic ticket you receive. As explained by the State of New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, the repercussions on your record of a moving violation will depend in part upon the reason for the violation.

The MVC has a detailed list of different types of actions and for each one, a certain number of points may be added to your record. The large majority of moving violations result in the addition of two points on your driving record. These include things like not following a yield or stop sign, not stopping when a light is in the flashing red mode, not stopping for a pedestrian who is in a designated crosswalk or driving the wrong way on a street or in a lane of traffic.

Depending upon the number of points you amass in a certain period of time, you may lose your license for a while or you may be asked to pay a surcharge to the state. The suspension period may vary based upon any prior suspensions you may have had.

If you would like to learn more about how the state of New Jersey assigns points to your driving record for minor moving violations and how that may impact your ability to drive, please feel free to visit the traffic citation and license suspension page of our New Jersey misdemeanor and criminal defense website.
