How many people are in New Jersey jails?

Many people may hear reports about concerns that jails and prisons in New Jersey or elsewhere are becoming too crowded. It can be important especially if you or someone you know has been arrested and may face the prospect of going to jail to understand how many people are actual incarcerated in the state of New Jersey.

According to the Department of Corrections, there are an estimated 17,000 people in custody across a total of 13 different correctional facilities in the state. These include facilities for maximum security or minimum security and in-between levels as well. Data as of the beginning of 2016 shows that nearly 60 percent of inmates have been convicted of violent offenses and another 16 percent have been convicted of crimes involving drugs. It is not known how many people may have been convicted of both types.

The vast majority of people are serving either short sentences less than six years in length or long sentences lasting at least 10 years. Of the 38 percent in this latter category, six percent have been sentenced to life in prison but do have the possibility of being eligible for parole. A total of 74 percent of all inmates have been ordered to serve some form of mandatory minimum sentence which can vary based upon the crimes for which they have been convicted.

This information is not intended to provide legal advice but is instead meant to give New Jersey residents an overview of the number of people incarcerated in the states various jails and prisons and the types and lengths of their sentences.
