Death of witness prompts early release of inmate

People who are arrested for and charged with serious crimes in New Jersey may often find it hard to trust that the criminal justice system can or will be fair to them. This, however, is very important and defendants need to know that there are certain processes that must be followed and that they provide great protection for defendant's rights.

One man is today free from prison rather than subject to additional charges due to what some may think are unusual circumstances but that are in fact very valid and real reasons for this action. The defendant was originally accused of hiring another person to kill a police detective in Bergen County. It is believed that this action was related to the officer's suspected involvement in providing information to a crime group.

The man who is said to have executed the murder of the officer was scheduled to be a primary witness in the trial for the defendant. This potential witness, however, died before it was his time to provide testimony. Without the witness available, the charges against the man for the murder case were dropped. He had been serving time in a federal prison for drug-related charges in two states including New York but he has since been let out of custody. No details were given as to any additional charges facing the now-freed defendant.

After being arrested in New Jersey, people may want to talk with an experienced criminal defense attorney to fully understand their options as well as the defense process.
