Teen faces life in prison if convicted of murder as an adult

Most New Jersey residents have heard references to people being charged with crimes as adults or as juveniles. While the age of a defendant is what generally may determine whether a person is tried as a juvenile or as an adult, this is not always so black and white.

Such is the case for one teenager from Jersey City today. While still only 16 years old, he is now facing murder charges as an adult. If he is ultimately convicted of the adult charges, he could be sentenced to life in prison. Reports indicate that a life sentence is estimated to last 67 years meaning that the boy could still be alive and in his early 80s when the sentence is complete. It is also possible that a sentence could be for a shorter time even down to 30 years.

The arrest of the young man comes several months after he was originally charged as a juvenile. It is not clear what led to the change. Also not known are details of the alleged murder. The person who died was a 17-year-old male. Some information indicates that multiple people were observed by officers moving the injured teen's body but the 16-year-old defendant is the only one identified in stories as facing charges. In addition to murder, he has been charged with two weapons offenses.

Minors who may be arrested for crimes as adults might find it helpful to work with an attorney to understand how the law approaches these situations and learn how to handle a defense.
