Reduction in DUI arrests may be linked to free rides

In New Jersey, a blood alcohol content of 0.08 percent is the threshold at or above which a driver may be considered intoxicated. This is the standard limit across the country and having such a limit may sometimes open up drivers to the risk of getting a DUI. The reason is that it is very difficult for people to truly know if they are above or below the 0.08 threshold.

Many very responsible people make the choice to drive home after being out and having a couple of drinks because they feel capable of doing so. In some cases, they may end up finding out that they were in fact above the legal limit. A program that started first in Evesham Township and then eventually was adopted in Voorhees Township may just help people who struggle to make the right decision about their ability to safely drive home.

Coined the Evesham Saving Lives started as a pilot last year and will now run for another year in both municipalities. It gives people who are not at home and who have had alcoholic beverages the ability to call for a free ride home. The rides are granted through BeMyDD or Uber apps and available within the local township limits between 9:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. More than 2,000 people have taken advantage of this service since it started leading to an estimated reduction in DUI arrests of 15 percent.

Drivers who have been arrested for impaired operation may find it useful to talk with an attorney. This can give people a good idea of how the defense process works and what they may need to do.
