DUI license suspension in New Jersey

If you have been arrested for suspected drunk driving in New Jersey, you may understandably be afraid of what may happen next. As drunk driving laws in New Jersey and around the nation have become stronger in recent years, defendants can face many challenges if they are ultimately convicted of these offenses. One of the potential consequences is the loss of driving privileges.

According to the State of New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, the length of time that you may be unable to drive can vary. Whether or not you have any previous DUI offenses on your record will be one of the factors that contributes to the length of your license suspension. In addition, your recorded blood alcohol content may also have an impact on this. A driver may lose the right to drive after a DUI conviction in New Jersey for a few months or for several years.

If you choose to drive while your license is suspended and you are caught doing so, your license suspension term may be extended. Among the other penalties you may face is the required payment of specific surcharges. If you do not pay these costs, you may lose your right to drive in New Jersey permanently.

Not being able to drive can significantly hurt your chances of getting or keeping a job. It can also negatively affect your personal life, especially if you have children that you are responsible for taking to and from school or other activities. This information is not intended to be legal advice but to provide general information about the loss of driving privileges for drivers convicted of drunk driving in New Jersey.
