A new way of looking at prescription drug crime charges

When seeing news headlines that talk about someone in New Jersey being charged with a prescription drug crime, all kinds of thoughts can come your person’s head. Before jumping to conclusions about the horrible things that person may have done, it is important to remember two things. First, an arrest is simply an allegation of wrongdoing and it does not prove that anything wrong actually did occur. Second, many things can get lumped into the category of a drug crime so getting clarity on the details matters greatly.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, prescription drug crimes and abuse are problems in the U.S. Estimates from the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse indicate that nearly seven million people between 18 and 25 years of age have abused a drug at least once in their lives. But, is every criminal case alleging drug fraud related to abuse or addiction?

The law states that it is illegal to distribute a prescription drug to someone without a valid prescription. It is also illegal to use a prescription drug for which you were not given a prescription. Have you ever been at a relative’s house and experienced a serious headache or other form of pain and needed some relief? Maybe your aunt had some pain medication left over from a time she needed it and wanted to share it with you. Taking that medication is technically you taking a drug not prescribed to you. Opioids, stimulants and depressants are the drugs most commonly associated with drug crimes. These may be the types of things a relative innocently shares with you.
