Plea deal in DWI case

New Jersey residents who have ever been stopped or arrested on suspicion of drunk driving know that the laws in this arena can be quite tough. Driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is not a criminal matter but even as a motor vehicle offense only, the consequences can be serious. These charges can also be faced by anyone, including a member of a law enforcement team.

Such was the case for one 29-year veteran of the New Jersey State Police in October of 2015. The 51-year-old state trooper was arrested for his first DWI offense after he hit a stopped car from the rear. The incident occurred on the Garden State Parkway in the mid-afternoon one day while the trooper was on duty. Despite initially denying that he was intoxicated and reportedly trying to bribe the arresting officer into not reporting him, the man ultimately entered a guilty plea to one count of drunk driving.

While the plea deal did result in a DWI conviction, it also saw dropped charges of having an open container in his squad car and careless driving. The man has been ordered to pay a fine of just under $400 and spend 12 hours in a response unit. He will also lose the right to drive a vehicle for seven months. The State Police department has put him on suspension pending an investigation. During the suspension period, he will not be paid his salary.

Cases like these show that sometimes not all charges can be pursued against a driver. It may be helpful for drivers arrested on DWI charges to talk with an attorney to learn more.
