Who must register as a sex offender in New Jersey

If you have been accused of a sex crime, you will have many questions about what potential penalties you can face in New Jersey. If you are ultimately convicted of a sex crime charge, participation in the state sex offender registry can be required. According to the State of New Jersey’s Office of the Attorney General, such registration is mandated for life. However, you can petition for removal from the program in some circumstances.

New Jersey requires both minors and legal adults convicted of sex crimes to register as sex offenders. People who have been convicted of sex crimes in other states but who work or go to school in New Jersey must also register. Out-of-state defendants who move to New Jersey have 10 days from the date they commence living in the state to register.

Some of the charges that can result in the requirement to register as a sex offender include the following:

  • Child prostitution.
  • Sexual assault or aggravated sexual assault.
  • Sexual conduct or aggravated sexual conduct with a minor.
  • Kidnapping.
  • Criminal restraint of a victim.

Charges relating to the endangerment of a child via some form of sexual conduct can also result in the registration requirement. Registrations must be validated every 90 days or every 12 months depending upon the offense. If you are planning to move to a new residence, you must notify the authorities 10 days before your move date.
