Police charge woman leaving liquor store with DWI

A New Jersey woman was charged with driving while intoxicated after she left a liquor store in Hopatcong on Feb. 19. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m on Holiday Drive following a 911 call.

Authorities said they received an anonymous call reporting a swerving driver just prior to the incident. The caller told police the car had pulled into the parking lot of the Liquor Factory on Holiday Drive. A police officer who responded to that location reportedly saw the woman leave the liquor store, get into the vehicle the caller had described and drive away.

Police then pulled the woman over for weaving. She failed to complete roadside sobriety tests and was then taken into custody. Allegedly, upon breath testing, the 66-year-old Hopatcong woman blew almost three times the legal driving limit. Officers cited her and then released her into the care of a friend. She is facing charges of driving while intoxicated, failing to keep right and reckless driving.

Drunk driving charges can result in several consequences in the event of conviction. In addition to the possibility of jail time, those who are convicted may also lose their driving privileges, be placed on probation, be assessed stiff fines and have mandatory substance abuse classes. People who are charged with drinking and driving may benefit by seeking the help of a criminal defense attorney. A lawyer may be able to negotiate with the assigned prosecutor in order to secure a plea to a lesser charge or to a sentence that does not include a stay in jail.
