Police arrest New Jersey man who fled car accident scene

A report of someone driving erratically summoned police to Route 9 and Frederick Drive in Berkeley Township, New Jersey. Police said that a vehicle had been hit by another vehicle that sped away from the scene.

After tracking down the fleeing vehicle, police arrested a 50-year-old man. According to their report, he had a suspended license and was believed to be driving under the influence although he would not submit to a breath test. He was taken to police headquarters and charged with eluding police, driving without a license and refusing the breath test.

The police chief said that his vehicle was also impounded. No injuries resulted from the car crash.

When a person is charged with drunk driving, serious consequences can arise such as fines, jail time, higher insurance rates and loss of a driver's license. A defense attorney might be able to help a person in that situation manage the consequences. If police errors occurred during the performance of sobriety tests or breath tests, then an attorney might be able to get that evidence removed from the case. A person also has Constitutional protection from unlawful searches. If a person was unfairly targeted by police, an attorney might be able to uphold his or her rights and get charges lowered or dropped. Even if evidence stands, a person could benefit by having an attorney negotiate with a prosecutor for reduced charges or a lighter sentence. Legal support might also help a person retain a driver's license or get one reinstated.
