New Jersey man accused of series of robberies is now in custody

An 18-year-old Newark man has been detained by police for his alleged role in a string of armed robberies throughout Essex County, according to reports. Police believe he is one of three men who robbed a Hillside Place resident as he was sitting in a parked car in his driveway around 8:25 p.m. on Dec. 28. One of the men was armed with a shotgun and ordered the victim to exit his car and get on the ground. The trio then reportedly stole the victim's wedding band and iPhone and ran away.

Authorities said the defendant was taken into custody around 3:45 p.m. on Dec. 29, after authorities found him driving a vehicle connected to another alleged robbery that took place in Newark. No information has been provided on the whereabouts of the other two suspects in the Hillside Place robbery.

A robbery charge could lead to harsh penalties, including heavy fines and a lengthy prison term, in the event of conviction. However, someone facing such charges may be able to mount a strong defense against the allegations by exercising their right to utilize a criminal defense attorney in court.

An attorney could scrutinize the evidence against a defendant for inconsistencies or inaccuracies, which could lead to a reduction or dismissal of charges. For example, prosecutors may attempt to use witness testimony to positively link the defendant to a robbery. However, witness recollections can be unreliable, and an attorney could cast doubt on witness claims by establishing that vision was limited at the time of the alleged incident or that their memory of the event is otherwise hazy. Even in cases where the evidence against a defendant is strong, a lawyer could negotiate with prosecutors for a plea deal that mitigates some of the penalties.
