New Jersey man charged with killing store owner

A man was taken into custody on the night of Dec. 20 in connection with the shooting death of a local business owner, according to media outlets. The business owner was killed on Sept. 16 in a variety store located on the 800 block of South Orange Avenue.

A spokesperson for the Newark Police Department says that officers received a tip regarding the individual's whereabouts, and he was later apprehended by police. The individual who was taken into custody may face murder charges. No information regarding the how the incident occurred was mentioned in the report.

A conviction for a serious charge such as murder can result in a life-long prison sentence and other severe consequences such as a permanent felony criminal record. A criminal defense lawyer may evaluate the evidence and circumstances in order to determine the best possible defense strategy. For example, if a murder charge can be reduced to a manslaughter charge, the penalties could be less severe. One way to have charges reduced is to agree to a plea bargain. Another way would be to provide evidence of mitigating circumstances that justify a reduction in charges.

Depending on the strength of the prosecutor's evidence, it might be worthwhile to take the case to trial. A defense lawyer might prepare and present a defense argument on a defendant's behalf. If the prosecutor does not convince the jury that the defendant is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, the defendant may be found innocent. In that event, the charges could be dropped against the defendant.
