2 New Jersey men accused of robbery, kidnapping

New Jersey authorities accused two people of robbing a man, kidnapping him and stealing items from his home on Nov. 17. The individuals were identified as a 20-year-old man and a 19-year-old man.

The incident occurred on Route 46 in Totowa. The 19-year-old who was allegedly robbed stated that the two men approached him with what he thought was a silver revolver. He stated that he was robbed at gunpoint before the accused men forced him to take them to his home in Wayne. The two men reportedly stole several items before leaving the scene.

The authorities executed search warrants on the accused 19-year-old's home the following day where they reportedly recovered a silver revolver. However, they determined that it was a pellet gun. Both individuals were being held on $500,000 bail after being charged with theft, kidnapping, burglary, possession of a weapon and terroristic threats. Additional charges, including armed robbery, were also in the process of being filed. The report did not state if the individual who was robbed and the two accused men knew each other prior to the incident or how the authorities identified the two men as potential suspects.

When someone is accused of committing a crime such as burglary or kidnapping, the penalties can be serious. In some cases, consequences may include a jail sentence, a criminal record and expensive fines. However, there are defense strategies that an attorney may employ depending upon the circumstances. For example, if the evidence is circumstantial at best or if there is weak evidence that the accused person was involved in the incident, a criminal defense attorney may seek an acquittal or negotiate with the prosecution to reduce the penalties.
