Former NJ Mayor begins trial on an assortment of charges

The former mayor of a New Jersey city went on trial last week for charges relating to a wide range of misconduct on his part while serving as a captain with the New Jersey Human Services Police.

While it isn't that unusual in today's news to see a story about a politician being charged with a crime, both high-profile defendants and those accused of less newsworthy crimes will need criminal defense strategies. Even those who plead guilty will need an opportunity to minimize any punishment handed down against them.

The accused former mayor was tasked with providing security at facilities operated by the Department of Human Services, including psychiatric hospitals. The complaint brought against the former mayor alleges that as a captain with the police, he filed fraudulent time sheets, collecting pay for work he supposedly did while records show he was in other parts of the state.

He is also accused of using official vehicles and gas cards for personal trips. In addition, he is accused of using his position of power to perform illegal background checks using a police database. He also allegedly falsely claimed that he had completed certification requirements for firearms.

As this point, the former mayor is only accused of these actions and is still considered innocent until proven guilty just as anyone accused of a crime would be. But a conviction for a crime can change someone’s life forever, from affecting family relationships to reflecting negatively on job applications. Anyone who is accused of illegal acts may benefit from the advice of an attorney with experience in defending criminal matters.
