Student was taking an exam, not helping to deal drugs

Despite their best efforts to make accurate investigations, occasionally New Jersey law enforcement officials may charge a person for a crime that he or she did not commit. When this happens, the accused person can experience uncertainty, worry over being convicted, or criticism from those in their community. This can present a disheartening and stressful situation for the innocent party until he or she is cleared of the charges.

Last month, a 21-year-old New Jersey college student was charged for allegedly participating in the circulation of illegal drugs. At the time, he was placed under arrest and was charged with conspiracy. Recently, the college student was cleared of these charges because he was able to verify with the police that he was taking an exam at the time. He produced a handwritten copy of the exam as evidence of his innocence.

The young man was linked to the alleged drug crimes because a vehicle that was observed during the alleged transaction was a one that the college student was reportedly riding in, according to the county’s assistant prosecutor. According to the student’s attorney, the vehicle belonged to the student’s cousin.

Sometimes, people make decisions without realizing the consequences of their actions for their future. Drug charges can lead to serious consequences and much stress for the accused party; however, when innocent people are charged for a crime they did not commit, these accusations can place them under especially severe distress and anguish. If you or someone you know has been charged for a crime that they did not commit, then it might be wise to consider consulting with a defense attorney who can help you to understand and protect your rights.
