Physician charged with drug, weapons crimes in Ocean County

Ocean County authorities continue to cast a wide net in combating the illegal sale and distribution of drugs. Recently, a 55-year-old doctor was charged with a range of crimes after police raided his office. According to a prosecutor, authorities conducted eight undercover operations to determine that the physician was illegally prescribing Xanax and Percocet.

Police also searched the doctor's Manahawkin residence, where they claim to have found loaded guns and an undisclosed amount of marijuana. In all, the doctor is accused of drug crimes, gun crimes and money laundering.

In addition to criminal penalties such as fines and jail time, doctors who are convicted of drug distribution can lose their professional licenses and thus their livelihood. Medical professionals who are faced with this possible outcome should understand that the prosecution is already building a case with a view toward applying the harshest possible penalties. To protect their rights and freedom, doctors accused of drug crimes would do well to develop a defense strategy as soon as possible.

In the last year, Ocean County and other parts of the state have seen a spike in drug overdose deaths, and authorities have stepped up efforts to fight what many see as an addiction epidemic. However, just because drug charges are aggressively prosecuted doesn't mean that anyone is automatically found guilty. People accused of illegal drug distribution have a right to challenge the prosecution's evidence.

Investigators and prosecutors do make mistakes, and a strong criminal defense will analyze the prosecution's evidence to ensure that faulty police work doesn't result in a conviction.
