Theft charges follow separate instances at Lanoka Harbor Walmart

Some people make the mistake of assuming that shoplifting from a major retail store -- Walmart, for instance -- is a victimless crime. While money may be tight for many New Jersey residents, prosecutors will nonetheless seek the severest possible penalties for misdemeanor theft crimes, and people who have been accused of theft will need a strong criminal defense.

Two Ocean County women were recently arrested in connection with separate incidents at a Walmart in Lanoka Harbor. Both women are accused of shoplifting from the store.

Police arrested one of the women on Jan. 5. Store security personnel claim that the 29-year-old Bayville resident put a number of items in her purse and tried to leave the Walmart without paying. She is accused of trying to steal a bra, some t-shirts, a pair of gloves, a beanie and a pack of pens.

Police subsequently found that the woman was wanted on a separate warrant issued by Manchester Township Municipal Court. After being arrested and processed at police headquarters, she was able to post bail and was given a criminal summons.

Police claim the other theft occurred on New Year's Day. A 27-year-old Manchester resident was arrested and charged with shoplifting items with a value of about $195. She was also processed, released and given a criminal summons.

A petty theft conviction can lead to heavy fines, jail time and a permanent criminal record. It may be possible, however, to achieve a favorable outcome either through negotiations or a trial.
