New Jersey mom sentenced for simple assault on kids

A 29-year-old New Jersey woman has been sentenced after pleading guilty to simple assault and other misdemeanor charges in connection with a school bus bullying incident. The woman, who had also pleaded guilty to criminal trespass and harassment, was sentenced to a two-year probation term after she reportedly boarded a school bus and struck several other students who had been accosting her daughter. The woman had contended that she did not lay her hands on any other students, according to initial reports from the Associated Press.

The simple assault and harassment charges were considered disorderly persons offenses, according to local news outlets.

Authorities claim that the woman climbed aboard a school bus from East Dover Elementary with her 51-year-old mother. Both women were seeking out a child that had been bothering the defendant's daughter. The younger woman was accused of cursing at the child and striking him and his seatmate. The older woman allegedly shouted at the children during the incident. Still, the younger woman says she never struck the other children, arguing that the incident simply was blown out of proportion by local media and school administrators. That woman says her daughter is the victim in this case because she suffered such serious bullying.

The defendant in this case said she had no other options left after school officials refused to take actions against physical and verbal abuse from other students. The woman's daughter and the alleged bully are both in the fourth grade. Officials say both of the boys received treatment by school nurses, and one of the children was taken to a hospital for evaluation after suffering a neck injury.

Parents whose children are being bullied often feel as though they have few options. They may become emotional when attempting to defend their kids. In this case, the judge sentenced the woman to a short two-year probation period, which reflects the seriousness of her crime. Criminal defense attorneys can help assault defendants learn more about their courtroom rights, helping them also maximize the outcome of their criminal cases.
