Woman facing charges for hosting drinking party

A New Jersey woman is facing criminal charges in connection with an Oct. 19 party she hosted at her Tenafly home. The woman, age 44, is facing drug charges, as well as maintaining a nuisance. She is also accused of permitting underage alcohol consumption at the party. Authorities report that a cursory search of the home revealed open containers of alcohol, along with evidence of drug use. Marijuana and cocaine were likely consumed at the party, according to officers.

The woman admits that she was inside the house during the festivities, which apparently attracted the attention of police when the children became too energetic.

Authorities said they observed 50 to 75 children fleeing the home when they arrived to investigate a loud house party. Police officers are still in the process of identifying the partygoers themselves, who are expected to be charged with juvenile crimes if they attended the bash. Detectives have interviewed witnesses and attendees, and they expect to be able to track down some of the juveniles based on personal property that was left behind at the scene.

The woman was released shortly after her arrest. She will be required to appear in court again on Nov. 6.

It is not clear whether the woman is the parent of a child attending the party. Many parents mistakenly believe that it is better to have children drink and use drugs at home. They reason that the child is more likely to be responsible when these activities are not undertaken on the streets. In fact, allowing youngsters to consume alcohol at any time can lead to criminal prosecution.

An arrest in a drug or underage-drinking case does not mean that the defendant is guilty, however. In this case, the woman could have been unaware that the drug use was occurring at all. Criminal defense attorneys can help drug crime clients such as this woman learn more about their courtroom rights, ensuring a fair legal proceeding from arraignment to sentencing and beyond.
