Driver facing series of charges for fatal crash

A New Jersey driver is facing drunk driving charges in connection with a fatal accident that killed two men and seriously injured two other victims. The man is accused of vehicular homicide, aggravated assault by auto and a variety of other moving violations, including drunk driving. In addition, the man appeared to have been speeding at the time of the collision.

Authorities say the man struck the other vehicle at a Maplewood intersection on Aug. 6. Investigation shows that the driver, age 20, failed to stop at a traffic sign in a neighborhood. Two of the vehicle's occupants, ages 16 and 21, were thrown from the car and pronounced dead at the scene. Those men were thrown between 35 and 60 feet, landing on opposite sides of a house in the residential area. One of the victims' bodies struck a wrought-iron fence, ripping it from its concrete foundations.

Two other victims, ages 20 and 21, were hospitalized with serious injuries. Officers report the young men had to be extracted from the crushed vehicle in order to be rescued. The driver also suffered some injuries, but he appears to be the least harmed out of every person involved in the crash.

So far, authorities have declined to comment on the driver's blood-alcohol content at the time of the accident. The speed at which the driver was traveling also remains undisclosed, along with the speed limit in the residential area.

A person who is arrested and charged with drunk driving offenses is not necessarily guilty, no matter the nature of the allegations. If you are facing allegations similar to those related to this accident, consider seeking the advice of a qualified personal attorney. These professionals can help you learn more about your rights and responsibilities in court, allowing you to make educated decisions about pleas and other courtroom choices. In addition, your criminal defense attorney will help protect your rights in court, representing your best interests from indictment through sentencing and beyond.
