Doctor sentenced for opioid distribution

News out of Trenton this week shows a Little Silver physician has been sentenced for oxycodone-related drug charges. The woman, age 52, had pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiracy to distribute the controlled substance, which is an opioid painkiller. She will serve 57 months' time in prison, along with three years' supervised release. The defendant will also pay a $5,000 fine and forfeit some $465,000 in illegal profits.

Another physician has also been sentenced to a nine-year prison term for his connection with the drug crimes. Another man, the leader of the reported drug distribution ring, will serve eight years in prison.

Authorities report the woman began writing the illegal prescriptions in 2009. The oxycodone was prescribed without medical need, according to investigators. They were filled at sites throughout New Jersey, including Monmouth, Ocean and Atlantic counties. Two years later, the woman began to distribute the drugs through a more sophisticated relationship with her significant other, a 49-year-old out-of-work landscape developer. That man received a 15-year prison term for his involvement in the scheme.

Investigators said two of the men would visit various doctors to solicit the prescriptions, paying for the medication in their names. Sometimes, other people's names would also be used on the documents. More than 15 other defendants were also implicated in the drug prescription ring after a full investigation from the Drug Enforcement Administration and a variety of other law enforcement entities.

In this case, the female physician was able to obtain a much shorter sentence than her male counterparts. News reports have not explained this discrepancy, but it is possible that the woman hired a competent attorney who was better able to protect her interests. If you are facing drug charges, only the best criminal defense attorney will do. Consider seeking the advice of a qualified defense attorney before making any significant moves in your criminal case, including plea agreements or other decisions. Your experienced lawyer can help protect your rights and develop a case strategy to see you through indictment, hearings, sentencing and beyond.
