Five men indicted for heroin distribution

New Jersey law enforcement officers report that five men have been indicted by a grand jury on drug charges related to selling and manufacturing heroin. The group ranges in age from 23 to 52 years of age. Authorities report that the group was arrested earlier in the year for possession of three pounds of heroin. Now, a 10-count indictment has been handed down by an area grand jury.

National drug sentences undergo reform

A new set of national sentencing standards for drug crimes has been released, with many of the new federal provisions resembling an existing New Jersey law. The reforms, designed to prevent low-level drug offenders from crowding the nation's prisons, signals a shift in the strategy for eliminating illegal drugs in the nation.

Driver facing series of charges for fatal crash

A New Jersey driver is facing drunk driving charges in connection with a fatal accident that killed two men and seriously injured two other victims. The man is accused of vehicular homicide, aggravated assault by auto and a variety of other moving violations, including drunk driving. In addition, the man appeared to have been speeding at the time of the collision.

Doctor sentenced for opioid distribution

News out of Trenton this week shows a Little Silver physician has been sentenced for oxycodone-related drug charges. The woman, age 52, had pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiracy to distribute the controlled substance, which is an opioid painkiller. She will serve 57 months' time in prison, along with three years' supervised release. The defendant will also pay a $5,000 fine and forfeit some $465,000 in illegal profits.
