Former Red Bank mayor facing drunk driving charges

The former mayor of a New Jersey town has pleaded not guilty to drunk driving charges in connection with a May arrest. The man was apprehended on the Garden State Parkway on May 13, according to official records.

Authorities report the man, age 63, has been charged with driving while intoxicated, unsafe lane change and reckless driving in connection with the incident. He was involved in a single-car accident on the parkway while allegedly driving drunk. The man's criminal attorneys have petitioned for a postponement in the case, which will allow the defense team to review discovery information that was just provided.

Troopers said they reported to a crash site at about 10 p.m. on May 13 in the northbound lanes of the Parkway. The former mayor's 2012 Mercedes-Benz vehicle had spun out of control, striking a guard rail. That vehicle eventually came to rest facing the oncoming traffic, according to reports. The man was luckily not injured in the collision, though his vehicle was towed from the scene of the accident.

This is not the first time the man has been in trouble with the law because of his driving habits; he was involved in a rear-end crash during his time in office. He pleaded guilty to charges of failure to report an accident and careless driving in connection with that event. Another citation in 2009 related to the man's failure to yield to a pedestrian. The man nearly struck a woman as she crossed a street on a particularly snowy night. No conviction was ever recorded for that incident.

In this case, the man's attorneys could provide him with legal counsel that could lead to the reduction or dismissal of charges. Skilled criminal defense attorneys can help their clients by educating them about their legal rights and options. In this situation, the man entered a plea of not guilty; a guilty plea would have different implications for the man's criminal record.
