Two New Jersey men arrested for alleged unlawful gun possession

Two New Jersey men face weapons charges after police allegedly seized two rifles and a shotgun from the trunk of one of their vehicles. The two men, 44 and 26, were allegedly observed by police looking at guns in the trunk of a car earlier in the month. Both defendants denied the charges but remain in police custody, unable to make bail.

According to prosecutors, the 26-year-old man told police that he was happy they arrested him. He allegedly said he was preparing to make a bad decision with the guns.

Police in Trenton began observing the 26-year-old defendant after an informant told them that he was selling weapons illegally from the trunk of his car. After watching him for weeks and gathering information, they were poised to make an arrest. Detectives say they saw the defendant on the morning of August 16 riding in a car with the second defendant.

They say the two men arrived at a house and got out of the vehicle. They approached the house and began talking with a third, unidentified man. The three men then walked back to the vehicle. When they opened the trunk, police allegedly observed two rifles and a shotgun. The three men then went into the house, and the two defendants returned to the vehicle about an hour later.

Police confronted them at the vehicle, where a canine allegedly detected the presence of explosives in the trunk. After getting a search warrant, police searched the vehicle and uncovered the three guns. The defendants have each been charged with three counts of unlawful possession of a weapon.

The 44-year-old defendant is from Puerto Rico and has a prior felony conviction for a weapons crime on his record. If he were to be convicted, he would face mandatory prison time. He has already served time for robbery and theft, according to a report.
