Jersey cop picked up for drunk driving

Many New Jersey residents might have assumed one man would have been on the other side of recent drunk driving charges. A 33-year-old New Jersey State Trooper, who hails from Spring Lake Heights, New Jersey, was instead on the receiving end of these charges after allegedly driving while intoxicated and causing an accident. Luckily, no one was injured in the ordeal.

The man was not on duty at the time, which was around 2:45 a.m. on July 25. He was, however, navigating his police vehicle when he struck two unoccupied, parked cars and crashed into a nearby creek. After the incident, the man fled the scene.

After being awaken by the sound of car alarms, a resident investigated the scene to find that his two cars were hit and the trooper's police cruiser was resting in the creek. He phoned local authorities, which turned the investigation over to state police.

The vehicles that were struck in the accident took on significant damage - one of them was even totaled.

The authorities eventually caught up with the trooper at his home and charged him with driving under the influence of alcohol in addition to leaving the scene of an accident and careless driving likely to endanger a person or property.

The trooper is currently suspended without pay until the criminal charges have been resolved. It's possible that he could be fired because policy states that even cops that are not on duty are not allowed to drink.

While all signs might point to the man's guilt, prosecutors must first prove that he was behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol. These are charges that cannot be taken lightly, as it will likely deeply impact the man's personal and professional life.
