Many call for drug emergency declaration

New Jersey residents who have been charged with criminal offenses related to drugs know that many factors may contribute to the use of illegal drugs or the use of prescription drugs. Drug addiction can be a serious problem faced by many that leads them into the path of legal and criminal trouble. While the judicial and law enforcement systems have traditionally focused on penalties for people accused of drug crimes, there is a growing awareness of the need for treatment.

Many in the current presidential administration are calling for a national emergency to be declared regarding the seemingly increasing number of people developing addictions to opioid pain medications. According to a report from the Presidential Commission on Combatting Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis, as many as 142 people die in the United States every day due to this problem. In 2015, more than 33,000 deaths were linked to opioid addition.

The push for an emergency declaration is made to open up funding for treatment as well as research into developing new pain medications that are not addictive or not derived from opiates. In addition, there is a call for law enforcement to protect those people who provide reports of overdoses rather than subjecting them to potential prosecution.

When facing a serious drug charge, New Jersey residents might be able to learn about their defense opportunities by talking with an attorney who understands the laws and associated drug programs available to them.
