Train drivers may face loss of job after DUI

New Jersey residents who have ever been arrested or know someone who has been arrested for a DUI or DWI offense know how extensive the penalties can be if ultimately convicted. People can be forced to incur serious financial penalties as well as the loss of driving privileges and more. The social stigma associated with a drunk driving charge can also take a toll on driver’s personal or work lives.

Now, a new law may be making its way in front of the state’s legislature that aims to add yet another layer of penalty on top of already existing consequences for drunk driving convictions for some drivers. The move comes in response to reports that indicate a train operator was allowed to keep driving trains even after having his driver’s license suspended on three different occasions. Only one of the license suspensions was related to an actual DUI conviction. The other two were related to an alcohol treatment program and to a breath test refusal.

Despite the fact that the driver only had one DUI conviction, lawmakers are now seeking to ban any light rail or train driver from working in such capacities after being convicted of drunk driving. Federal laws do not require train drivers to have valid drivers’ licenses but the new state law would take precedence.

People who are accused of drunk driving deserve help with their defenses. Talking with an attorney at this time may be beneficial.
