Perhaps one of the most difficult things for people in New Jersey who are arrested to remember is that an arrest does not guarantee a conviction. Being charged with a crime of any nature, especially a felony, can be a very scary experience. This is so whether or not a defendant is actually guilty. With often extreme penalties possible, a person’s life and future can all of a sudden be turned upside town.
The recent arrest of a man from Haddon Township is one example of this type of situation. The body of the defendant’s preschool-aged son was found in Cooper River Park last October. At the time, reports indicate that authorities stated that the father was not a potential suspect in the case. Police interviewed him and he answered their questions without even having an attorney with him.
It is unclear exactly what has changed in the last few months but the father has now been arrested and charged with murder in his young son’s death. In addition to a murder charge, he faces charges of child endangerment. The exact cause of the boys’ death remains unknown at this time. It was the father who called for help early one morning when he could not find his son in their home. Further details of the man’s indictment show that he is accused of either directly causing the boy to die or of inflicting an injury that led to the boy’s death.
People who face situations like these may feel unsure of what to do. Talking to an experienced criminal defense lawyer can be one thing to do that provides help at these times.
