Suspected drug dealer faces up to 20 years in prison

People who live in New Jersey know that their state is tough on drug crime. In 2014, police were instructed to seek out suspected drug dealers after any person is found to have died due to drug use. This edict came from the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice. The goal of finding the dealers is to hold them criminally accountable for the deaths of those who used the drugs.

Today, one man is currently in Passaic County Jail on a $100,000 all-cash bail for this very reason. The 33-year-old defendant faces multiple charges including distribution of heroin. But perhaps more importantly, he is also charged with liability in the October 2015 death of a man in New York. The New Yorker was a 28-year-old man who died from an overdose of heroin reportedly laced with a substance called fentanyl. The first-degree charge carries with it a potential sentence of between 10 and 20 years in a New Jersey state prison if a conviction is achieved.

Reports indicate that the defendant is accused of selling as many as 50 packets of the heroin substance to the man who died. Among the evidence cited for connected the alleged dealer to the deceased man was the notation of “Ball Room” on the heroin envelopes. These envelopes were among the items found where the victim’s body was recovered at his home.

Being charged with any form of crime can be a scary thing, especially when the consequences are severe as in this case. People facing such allegations may wish to consult with an attorney to understand their rights and options.
