How do ignition interlock devices work?

If you have lived and driven in New Jersey for any length of time, you know that the state cracks down hard on people convicted of drunk driving. Among the many penalties that you could be subject to if in this position is the required installation of an ignition interlock device. While you may have heard about IIDs, understanding how they work is important in the event that you are ever ordered to use one.

IgnitionInterlockDevice.org explains that these devices are comprised of multiple components. One is an element that captures breath test data. This would generally be installed on your vehicle’s dashboard. The other is a microchip that receives the data and can put a lock on a not-yet-started vehicle engine. This chip records test results and other information for review by law enforcement.

You must successfully pass a breath test every time you wish to drive your car in order for the ignition to be unlocked. After you have passed a test, you may start and drive your car. Somewhere between five and 30 minutes after beginning a journey, you may be signaled to take another test while driving. If you fail that test, visible or audible alarms may sound until you stop the car and turn off the ignition.

You will be responsible for all costs associated with the IID. This includes installation, a monthly rental fee, maintenance and calibration. This information is not intended to provide legal advice but general information about how ignition interlock devices work in New Jersey.
