Gun bill supported in legislature stopped by Governor

New Jersey residents who wish to exercise their right to purchase and own a gun will no doubt be interested to see how this topic is handled in the upcoming presidential election. With the New Jersey Governor currently in the running as a candidate for President, the topic is having an impact on laws and bills within the state as well as in the Governor’s presidential campaign. Weapons charges are clearly something the country and the state will hear a lot about in the coming year.

Even before announcing his bid for the presidency, the New Jersey Governor signed multiple pieces of legislation including one that increased the penalties for illegal felony possession of a weapon. Another law required the National Instant Criminal Background Check System to be notified by the state about any person not legally able to buy a gun.

Recently, the Governor vetoed a bill that had received overwhelming bipartisan support. The bill would have forced anyone making a petition to remove a mental health history from court or criminal records to notify multiple law enforcement agencies of their wish to purchase a gun. In both the Assembly and the Senate, no votes against the bill were recorded although a total of eight people abstained voting. It is uncertain whether the state legislature will attempt an override of the Governor’s veto.

Guns and other weapons can be involved in many allegations such as assault charges, rape and other felonies. Fighting a felony charge related to a weapon can be complicated but is possible.
