New Jersey police find drunk driver in disabled vehicle

Police say that they discovered a 48-year-old female driver was under the influence of alcohol after responding to a car about a disabled vehicle. When police arrived at the scene on Mountain Road in Pohatcong Township, they noticed that a distinct odor of alcohol was coming from the woman's breath. The driver was asked to take field sobriety tests, which she reportedly did poorly on.

Due to her performance on the field sobriety tests, she was taken into custody. As part of their investigation, authorities also determined that the woman had been involved in and was responsible for a single car crash on River Road. Police were able to deduce this fact by following a trail of oil that started at the scene of the accident and continued to where the vehicle became disabled.

The driver faces numerous charges including driving while intoxicated and obstructing traffic. She was also charged with failure to report an accident, leaving the scene of an accident and careless driving. Although police said that there were many reasons why they believed she was intoxicated, there was no information regarding her blood alcohol content at the time of the incident as she allegedly refused to submit to breath testing.

Those who are charged with drunk driving could face serious consequences. For instance, it may be possible to spend time in jail, serve time on probation and have driving privileges suspended or revoked. Additionally, it may be necessary to pay a fine, legal costs and increased insurance premiums. Therefore, it may be advisable to talk to a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible to determine how best to defend against the charges.
