New Jersey felon pleads guilty to weapons charges

On April 7, a 27-year-old New Jersey man pleaded guilty to federal charges stemming from the illegal sale of firearms. He could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

According to U.S. prosecutors, the defendant admitted he met with someone outside a Fort Lee grocery store with the intention of selling them three handguns on Nov. 13, 2013. He also confessed that he sold a confidential informant nearly three dozen firearms and hundreds of ammunition rounds between June 2013 and February 2014.

The defendant offered various weapons for sale, including sawed-off shotguns, assault-style rifles, semiautomatic weapons and firearms featuring high-capacity magazines. A portion of the weapons had their serial numbers removed. In a Newark federal court, the defendant pleaded guilty to one count of possessing firearms while being a previously convicted felon. He had been convicted of drug possession and robbery in 2014, according to state records.

Anyone who is arrested on federal weapons charges could face severe and life-altering consequences, including significant prison time and steep fines. However, every defendant is innocent until proven guilty and is entitled to legal representation. A criminal defense attorney in this type of case could review the evidence for things that may be employed in building a defense strategy. In some instances, a defense of entrapment could be raised. In others, it may be possible to negotiate an arrangement that would entail entering a plea of guilty to a lesser charge in exchange for the dismissal of a more serious one.
