Man pleads guilty to child porn, 6 others implicated

News reports from New Jersey show that seven men have been accused of felonies in connection with an alleged child porn ring in the state. A full investigation was launched after a 23-year-old defendant was arrested in 2012. That man recently pleaded guilty to charges of child pornography and endangering the welfare of a child. He had a cache of pornographic images on his computer and implicated six others in the distribution ring. The defendant who pleaded guilty was considered to be the ringleader of the suspected operation.

Authorities report the images on the computer included hard-core images of children being raped. In addition, the man had about a thousand images of two girls who had been imposed into different backgrounds using Photoshop. Even though the two girls in those images were clothed, the man would often crop their pictures and place them in pornographic situations through the use of digital technology. Those representations apparently still constitute child porn, even though the girls were not directly affected.

A sentence has not yet been handed down in the case, but the state intends to recommend a seven-year federal prison term. The man would also be required to continue parole supervision for the remainder of his natural life under existing state law.

The continued joint investigation after the man's arrest led to the apprehension of six other men, ranging in age from 23 to 76. Those defendants hail from diverse locations, including New Jersey, Wyoming, Florida, Texas and Virginia. At least one of those defendants has already pleaded guilty to charges in his state, where he is now considered a registered sex offender.

Even though the men's alleged crimes may make others uncomfortable, the defendants in this case still deserve fair legal proceedings. The nature of a crime should not alter the way we view our judicial system. In fact, everyone whose case is considered in New Jersey court has the same privileges and rights.
