Gang member indicted for alleged role in shooting of child

A grand jury indictment has ruled that a gang member should be charged with several felonies for his involvement in a shooting that severely injured a 5-year-old boy. The child was walking home from school with his mother in January when he was allegedly shot by the gang member. The 18-year-old defendant has been indicted on murder and weapons possession charges in connection with the shooting.

Authorities report that the young man appears to have been walking with friends and fellow gang members on Jan. 10 when the group encountered members of a rival gang, MS-13. Those people reportedly showed a series of gang signs in an attempt to provoke the members of the 18th Street Gang as they walked on Plainfield Avenue that afternoon. Officers claim that the man opened fire on the group of MS-13 gang members, but he failed to hit any of his targets. Instead, he wounded the child as he walked down the street.

The boy was seriously injured in the incident, spending several weeks in treatment at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. The serious injuries led to the involvement of the Homicide Task Force in the investigation; apparently, officers believed it possible that the child might die from his serious injuries.

The defendant was arrested days after the incident when he was identified by his friends and the victim.

The young man in this case would benefit from enlisting the services of a qualified criminal defense attorney. He is facing felony charges, which are significantly more serious than simple misdemeanors. Felony sentences are not accompanied by the possibility for parole.

Qualified attorneys can lend their professional expertise to defendants' criminal cases. These professionals can help defendants learn more about their rights and responsibilities in the courtroom. Further, they can provide legal support from indictment through sentencing and beyond.
